Varias personas compran televisores en un Wal-Mart el día que empiezan las rebajas prenavideñas en Estadis Unidos.

Una avalancha de voraces compradores que hacen fila desde el amanecer, se precipita sobre las puertas de los comercios apenas abren sus puertas, en lo que en la tradición consumista de los Estados Unidos se llama el viernes negro, el día que sigue al de acción de gracias, cuando en todos os hogares la mesa del comedor se vuelve un altar ritual alrededor del pavo cebado todo el año. El jueves se come, el viernes se compra. Todo lo que pueda comprarse, porque ese día, en  los inmensos centros comerciales, infinitos como catedrales en sus espacios y honduras, se ofrecen descuentos del 50 por ciento, o más. Y se llama viernes negro no porque sea un día fúnebre, o de previsibles sucesos sangrientos,  sino porque los comerciantes aspiran a convertir sus cifras rojas de  posibles pérdidas, en anotaciones negras de ganancias.

Multitudes que desfilan apresuradas en procesión por los pasillos de Macys, de Best Buy, de Sacks, de Nordstrom, se arrebatan las prensas marcadas en baratillo, y se arman conatos de pleitos, arañazos, golpes discretos. Pero ha habido situaciones peores. En Palm Desert, California, dos personas han muerto en un tiroteo desatado dentro de Toys R Us, una tienda de juguetes. ¿Alguien habrá impedido a otro, a balazos, llevarse el juguete más barato para su hijo?

Biografía

Sergio Ramírez nació en Nicaragua en 1942. Publicó su primer libro Cuentos, a los veinte años. Participó en la lucha para derrocar la dictadura Somoza y formó parte del gobierno revolucionario, del que llegó a ser vicepresidente en 1985. En su obra literaria figuran, entre más de una treintena de libros, Castigo divino (1988), Premio Internacional Dashiel Hammett de Novela; Un baile de máscaras (1995), Premio Laure Bataillon a la mejor novela extranjera en Francia en 1998; Margarita está linda la mar,  Premio Alfaguara de Novela 1998, y Premio Latinoamericano José María Arguedas en el 2000. Así también Cuentos completos (1998), con prólogo de Mario Benedetti; Adiós Muchachos, memoria de la revolución sandinista, (1999); el libro de cuentos Catalina y Catalina (2001); Mentiras Verdaderas (2001) y El viejo arte de mentir (2004), ambos sobre la creación literaria (2001); las novelas Sombras nada más (2002) y Mil y una muertes (2004); Señor de los Tristes, ensayos sobre escritores y escritura (2006), El reino animal, cuentos (2006), Tambor olvidado, ensayos (2007), El cielo llora por mí (2009) y La fugitiva (2011).
